Jeanne J. Cohen, 96, (nee Merves) of Lorain passed away on Saturday, July 21, 2018 at Huntington Woods Care and Rehabilitation Center in Westlake following a long illness. She led an active life living independently in her own home until this past year.
Mrs. Cohen was born in Lorain on October 22, 1921 to the late Jacob and Ida (nee Roberson) Merves. She was a graduate of Lorain High School in the class of 1939-B.
She was a member of the Agudath B’nai Israel Synagogue in Lorain. She was a member of Hadassah, Temple Sisterhood and volunteered at the Lorain County Senior Volunteer Program since 1983. After volunteering at Anchor Lodge Retirement Village for decades, Jeanne retired only last year.
Mrs. Cohen was a sales associate for the former Style Center, an upscale ladies clothing store in downtown Lorain.
She is survived by her daughter-in-law Arlene Cohen of Farmington, CT, granddaughters Shari Nastri of Avon, CT and Julie Doscher of Great Neck, NY, as well as five great grandchildren Justin, Dylan, Ally, Andie and Eden.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Martin in 1981, son Arnold in 1989, sister Miriam Pearl, brothers Solomon Merves, Edward Merves, David Merves and Chester Merves.
Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, July 25, 2018 at 11:00 am. in the Salem Cemetery, 1458 North Ridge Road, Sheffield Township.
The family will sit Shiva Wednesday, July 25, 2018 from 5-7 pm at the Agudath B’nai Israel Synagogue, 1715 Meister Road, Lorain, Ohio.
The family suggest that memorial contributions may be made to the Agudath B'nai Israel, 1715 Meister Road, Lorain, Oh8io 44053 in Jeanne's memory.
