Albert Carlin Doane, 96, born February 2, 1925, in Lorain Ohio, to Carlin M. Doane and Olive H. (Pancoast) Doane, passed away on Friday, June 4, 2021. Father of Jennifer Springer, Michael (Cynthia) Doane, Priscilla (Wayne) Campbell and Sara (Barry) Alexin. Grandfather to Jeffrey, Jessica, Nicholas, Cheryl, Mallory, and Kelsey, and great grandfather to Maximus, Samuel, Hailey, Taylor, Casey, Blair, Nora, Owen and one on the way. Also stepfather to Peggy (Jack) Haney, Pete (Cindy) Wagner, Mark Wagner, Cindy (Rudy) Ochs, Lisa Fleury, Wendy (Jim) Ohliger, Paul (Lisa) Wagner, Connie (Steve) Strbich, Tim (Joanne) Wagner, Tom (Lisa) Wagner, step grandfather to forty two grandchildren and step great grandfather to 15 great grandchildren. There will be over twenty great-grand children who will always think of “Papa Owl” when they think of their special great grandfather.
He graduated from Lorain High School with the class of 1943-A. He was a proud Navy veteran who served on the USS Wichita in the Pacific in WWII. After returning home, Albert graduated from Ohio University with a degree in Electrical Engineering.
Albert was married to Patricia Ann Blank on June 15, 1949, who passed away on September 8, 2000. Albert married Bernadine (Theobald) Wagner on September 2, 2006.
Albert was predeceased by his parents, and brothers Robert, Neil and Roger and one granddaughter, Kelsey.
Al was a lifelong Methodist, serving in many capacities at First United Methodist Church in Lorain and then at Cornerstone United Methodist in Elyria. He was a Mason for over 70 years and a dedicated Kiwanis member for the same amount of time. Al was always one to lend a helping hand and give a smile to anyone in need.
Growing up in Lorain, Albert loved spending time on Harmon’s Beach from his early childhood with his three older brothers building and sailing boats. This early love of Lake Erie continued throughout his entire life, from the original sailboats on the beach to the massive lake freighters to his beloved Lorain Lighthouse.
Al worked for CM Doane Electric Company from the 1950s, eventually becoming part owner and President until he retired in 1984. Retirement brought a whole new life, traveling with Patsy, enjoying being a grandfather, and being the family historian/genealogist. Al was also a lifelong member of the Doane Family Association, a past president and longtime contributing member of the board. Another very big part of his life was preserving the history of Lorain, including his presentations on the Lakeshore Electric Interurban street cars and the 1924 Lorain tornado, and being one of the founders of the Black River Historical Society.
Then again life changed when Al’s love of local history introduced him to Bernadine Wagner, who became his second wife. This young at heart couple enjoyed every minute of their bonus time together and we are all better people because of this golden marriage.
