On June 19, 2024 the sun set on a beautiful life. Capt. Robert (Bob) Jaycox Sr, a Lorain icon to many, passed away peacefully at Kingston of Vermilion Nursing Home with his daughter by his side.
Bob was born in Lorain, on June 27, 1926 to Plynn & Ruth Jaycox (nee Coats).
Bob attended Lorain High School and joined the US Navy at age 17 and served during WWII. Bob was a Bosun Mate on the destroyer USS Mayrant DD402 alongside FDR Jr. The Navy took him from New York to Africa, sailing the seas. The love of the water was in his blood and you couldn’t take that away from this strong, successful, often head-strong man.
After the service, his love of the water took him to work on an ore freighter as a Merchant Marine, until he met his wife Virginia (nee Traxler). They were married and had two children, Robert Jr. and Carol.
Bob was a commercial fisherman on Lake Erie for many years while working as a stationary engineer at Ohio Edison. He retired from Ohio Edison and became Harbor Master of Lorain. He and his wife, Virginia, bought the 72 ft Miss Majestic and sailed her from Key Largo, Florida into Lorain. Their business began as “Lorain Charter Boat Service”, then grew to become “Majestic Fishing Fleet” joined by Bob Jr. Capt. Bob & Virginia were a staple back in the day, and where you saw one you saw the other. Capt. Bob Sr’s knowledge of Lake Erie and love of fishing made him one of the best commercial fishermen and charter boat captains in the area.
In addition to his love of fishing, he had many interests. In his younger years, he became a licensed pilot. Every time we’d pass an open field he’d say “I used to land in fields like that!” His love of airplanes rubbed off on his daughter and they attended the Cleveland Air Show where he’d marvel at the military planes, P51 mustang planes, and of course, the Blue Angels. At 80 years of age, Capt. Bob became an author. First teaching himself how to use a computer, then typing & publishing three books, “Navy Tin Can Man”, “A Love Story Good Grief”, and his last book “Murder 123”.
In June 2023 Capt. Bob resided at Kingston of Vermilion. His end of life experience was peaceful by having beloved friends and family by his side daily. Southern Care Hospice provided wonderful care and support while working alongside of Kingston of Vermilion staff. The family of “Captain” would like to thank all the people who chose love, kindness, and compassion as a means of career, as well as his many doctors. From kitchen staff to administration, the care, love, and respect were appreciated and will never be forgotten.
Capt. Bob is survived by his daughter Carol (Mike) Pozega, sister Lynne Carole (Tom) of Macomb, Michigan. Granddaughters Nicole Pozega of Avon Lake, Joni Jaycox of Lorain, Christie Jaycox of Lorain, Lisa Jaycox of Berlin Heights. He is also survived by many great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
