Douglas Towart Obituary

Douglas J. " Doug" Towart, 64, of rural Norwalk passed away on January 5, 2024 at his home following a brief illness.

Mr. Towart was born in Pittsfield, MA on December 20, 1959, the son of the late James R. and Helen P (nee Piskorski) Towart. He was a graduate of Lanesborough High School in Lanesborough, Massachusetts. He held a bachelor's degree in engineering from the Worchester Polytechnic Institute in Wooster, MA.

He retired from General Dynamics Missions Systems (General Electric, Martin Marietta, Lockheed Martin) after 36 years. During his career Doug participated in many of our Navy’s strategic and surface defense programs with assignments across the country: Pittsfield, MA, Dahlgren, VA, Cape Canaveral, FL, Bangor, WA as well as an assignment in Holy Locke, Scotland. Doug was a talented engineer and leader having a significant impact on the people and teams he worked with. He loved working on assignments that required him to work directly with our products being deployed and the warfighters that used them.

He also spent time working with NASA at Cape Canaveral, FL.

He loved to play music especially the bass guitar, playing bluegrass, rock and roll, and a big fan of the Grateful Dead. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, watching the Seahawks football team, hiking and golf. He once drove a race car at the Daytona 500 Speedway attaining a top speed of 193 mph.

Doug is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 30 years, Kelly (nee Alexander) Toward, son Robert J. Alexander of Seattle, WA, grandson ~ A.J. Alexander, his nephew Lachlan (Asheefa) Towart and their children, Isla, Kieran living in the United Kingdom, sister Debra Towart also of the United Kingdom, and a brother Geoff (Lisa) Towart of Pepperell, MA. Rob Towart was a significant part of Debi and Lachlan Towart‘s family. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his nephew Gavin Towart.

Per Doug's wishes, a Celebration of Life is being planned for a later date with interment in Massachusetts.
