Hazel Louise “MawMaw” Scarbro, 80, (nee Stone) passed away on Thursday, January 18, 2024 at the Mercy Health - St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital following a long illness.
Mrs. Scarbro was born in Edwight, WV on June 10, 1943, the daughter of the late John Clarence and Effie Marie (nee Bailey) Stone. She was one of fourteen children.
She was incredibly loving and made it her life’s mission to care for others. She was a retired nurses’ aid at Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Avon. At home she raised six of her own children and always helped out with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Walking into her home, one would feel a sudden sense of country hospitality. She made sure anyone who came in had a full belly when they left. Even if someone dropped in unexpectedly, she’d always work magic with her cast iron pans and come up with a great meal to share. She truly prided herself on her cooking, family favorites being her chicken and broccoli, pinto beans, cornbread and her most famous cheesecake. She enjoyed gardening fruits and vegetables and also enjoyed her flowering trees. She was an avid owl collector, having hundreds of them proudly displayed throughout her home.
Hazel is survived by daughters Loretta L. Gnora of Lorain, Cynthia L. Bryant of Mansfield, Angela M. (Bill) Ans of Parma, son Calvin S. Scarbro of Youngstown, 26 grandchildren, 76 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild, and a sister Linda (Michael) Patrick of Ringgold, Georgia.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Donald W. Scarbro, and sons Donald W. Scarbro, Jr. and John W. Scarbro.
Friends may call 2:00 until services at 4:00 pm on Saturday, January 27th in the Schwartz, Spence, Boyer & Cool Home for Funerals, 1124 W. 5th Street, Lorain.
Burial will be in the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman.
