Helen D. Campbell, 82, of Elyria, passed away on Sunday, June 19th, 2022 in her home surrounded by family after battling a long illness. Helen was born on February 26th, 1940 as Helen Dorinda Sharp, in New Richmond, Ohio on Ten Mile Road. She was one of thirteen children.
Helen graduated high school in Bitburg, Germany at the Bitburg U.S. Airforce Base, and attended nursing school at Bethesda Hospital Nursing School in Cincinnati, Ohio. She met her future husband, Walter A. Campbell while at nursing school, and they fell in love while exchanging letters that crossed an ocean. They married shortly after Helen graduated (September 7th, 1962), on March 16th, 1963 in England.
After moving back to the United States, Helen and Walter moved to Lorain, and then eventually settled in Elyria, where she lived until her passing. The Campbells had two sons, Walter B. Campbell and Jeffrey F. Campbell. Helen devoted over fifty years of her life caring for others as a nurse in various locations around Lorain County, and was beloved for her gentle nature. She was a lover of gardening, Celine Dion and Josh Groban’s music, Cleveland sports teams, and watching hummingbirds flit by outside. Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Walter A. Campbell, and her youngest son, Jeffrey F. Campbell.
Helen will be remembered for how generous she was. She had many honorary “grandchildren” and all were welcome in her home. She was very talented, and created beautiful baby blankets through her embroidery and counter cross stitch. She also loved to craft, whether it was knitting or painting, and even ceramics. She will live on through the love of grandchildren and great grandchildren and the many lives she touched as a nurse.
Helen Campbell is survived by her son, Walter B. Campbell, her daughter-in-law, Debra A. Campbell (nee King) of Elyria, four granddaughters, Katherine (Bruce) Lightner, Elizabeth (Erik) Collins, Amy Campbell, and Sarah Campbell of Elyria, one grandson, Walter B. Campbell II of Elyria, a great granddaughter, and two great grandsons.
Graveside services will be held on Monday, June 27, 2022 in the Elmwood Cemetery, 640 N Ridge Rd, Lorain, OH 44053 at 1:00 pm.
