Janet Tyler, 90, of Lorain, Ohio, and Baltimore, Maryland, passed away peacefully on March 31, 2021. Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service and celebration of Janet’s life at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 13 at Heritage Presbyterian Church in Amherst, Ohio.

Janet grew up in Kettering, Ohio, with her parents and older brother Russell. She was a graduate of Fairmont High School, where she loved playing on the Dragons field hockey team. At the age of 17, she began her freshman year at Ohio University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education, enjoyed living in the Zeta Tau Alpha house, and was introduced by friends to her husband of 55 years, Bartlett “Buzz” Tyler.

Janet and Buzz married in Kettering in 1952 with many of Janet’s recent kindergarten students joining family and friends in attendance. She taught in the Lorain City Schools for two years before staying home to raise their three daughters. She also later taught nursery school at the First Congregational Church in Lorain.

Janet was a devoted volunteer, who served for more than two decades on the auxiliary of Lorain Community Hospital, including terms as auxiliary president and a member of the hospital’s Board of Trustees. She made lifelong friends through volunteering in the hospital’s special gift shop, The Treasure Chest, and as a member and elder of Northminster Presbyterian Church (now Heritage Presbyterian Church).

She was active in AAUW, Colony Club and Wimodaughsis Club and played bridge, but loved the dinners and cameraderie even more with a close-knit group of friends, affectionately called the “Bridge Club.”

Janet and Buzz moved to Fort Myers Beach, Florida, in 1994, where Buzz served as the membership director for the Greater Fort Myers Beach Area Chamber of Commerce. Janet continued her community service as a volunteer at HealthPark Medical Center and they both served as elders of Chapel by the Sea.

Janet moved to Baltimore in 2009, two years after Buzz’s death, to live with and be near her family. She was an avid reader who enjoyed taking classes at the Renaissance Institute at Notre Dame of Maryland University and attending Brown Memorial Woodbrook Presbyterian Church and its Book Club and Lunch Bunch outings.

Janet is survived by her three daughters Anne Elliott (Fred Michel) of New York City, Jane Decker Davis (Tom Davis) of Charlestown, Rhode Island, and Amy Gaag (Ehren Gaag) of Baltimore. She is also survived by her grandchildren Emily Parkwell (Tyler Parkwell), Bobby Elliott (Victoria Elliott), Steven Decker, Kyle Decker and Andrew Gaag, as well as three great grandchildren, her much-loved nieces and nephews, and the family’s special exchange student Elka Siebens of Hannover, Germany.
