John William Pavic, 94, former Superintendent of Lorain City Schools, and longtime resident of Lorain, OH passed away peacefully November 9, 2022.
John was born April 8, 1928, in Southwest, PA, the son of Joseph and Elizabeth Pavic. He graduated from Redstone High School in 1946. Upon graduation, John served in the US Army and Army Reserves. He graduated from California State College (PA) with a Bachelor’s in Education, and received his Master’s from Kent State. John married Marie Cavaretti on June 4, 1949, in Brownsville, PA and moved to Lorain, Ohio.
John began his career as an elementary teacher in 1951 in Lorain City Schools and spent 38 years within the district as Principal, Supervisor and Director of Elementary Education, Director of Curriculum and Federal Programs, and Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction. He was selected as Superintendent of Lorain City Schools in 1981 and served in that role until 1989. John continued his career in education as Director of Professional Development, Ashland University until 2001.
John and his wife, Marie, were members of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Lorain. He was actively involved with professional and civic organizations, serving in leadership roles including Red Cross Director, Kiwanis President, United Way Director, and Lorain Mayor’s Advisory Council.
A true sportsman, John loved to golf, fish, and hunt. He also enjoyed traveling with his wife, spending time with family and friends, and playing poker.
He is survived by his daughter, Jill Pavic of Amherst; sons, Jeff (Beth) Pavic of Rocky River, and Mark (Leslie) Pavic of Amherst; grandchildren, Trent (Kathleen) Pavic, Adam (Ann) Pavic, Annie Pavic, Nikolas (Serina) Pavic, Haley Pavic; and great-grandsons, John, Paulie, and Vincenzo Pavic. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marie; parents, Joseph and Elizabeth Pavic; sister, Jean Valko.
The family will receive friends on Sunday from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Schwartz, Spence, Boyer & Cool Home for Funerals, 1124 5th Street, Lorain, OH 44052.
Funeral services will held Monday, November 14, 2022 at 10:30 am with Father John Retar officiating. Burial will be at Ridge Hill Memorial Park with full Military Honors provided by AmVets Post 32 Honor Guard.
