Rachel C. Baker, 84, (nee Coley) of Amherst passed away on Wednesday, July 8, 2020 at her home following a brief illness.
Mrs. Baker was born in Alabama on January 17, 1936, the daughter of the late Rev. Robert and Ella Maye Coley. She graduated from high school in Fort Payne Alabama.
A devout Christian, she was blessed with a ability to play the organ and as child played organ for her father and his church. She played the organ for 11 yearrs at the Grafton Baptist Church. She also had worked for Ted Jacobs Department Store as a seamstress and (in her words "Peddled Plastic) worked as a Tupperware area manager. She was a master gardener, winning several 1st and 2nd place awards at the Lorain County Fair for her vegetables and flower arrangements. She prided herself with an apple tree she had in the back yard for more than 50 years and supplied many apples for her apple pies. She especially enjoyed cooking for her family gatherings and sharing her funny childhood stories. She will be remembered for her generosity and serving heart.
She was an active member of the Order of Eastern Star, Queen City Chapter # 66. She was their organist and a former Worthy Matron.
Rachel is survived by her daughter, Beth Humphreys of Amherst, grandchildren: Jeremy, Jenny, April, Vicky, Savannah, Grant, Gwyn, great grandchildren: Hailey, Matthew, Liliana, Rachel, Zaedyn, and a sister Grace (Donald) Foshee, of Georgia.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son Robert Hester in 2016, sisters Audrey McBrayer and Helen Nash.
Friends and family may call on Thursday from 4 p.m. - 7 p.m. in the Schwartz, Spence, Boyer & Cool Home For Funerals, 1124 W. 5th Street, Lorain. Eastern Star Services will be held at 6:30 p.m. Funeral services in the funeral home will follow at 7:00 p.m. with Pastor John Grodell, officiating.
Burial will be Friday, July 17, 2020 at 11:00 AM in the Elmwood Cemetery, with Chaplain John Jackson, officiating.
Covid 19 protocols will be observed at the funeral home and cemetery, please wear a mask. Mask will be available at the funeral home. The family suggest that memorial contributions may be made to the Heifer International, P.O. Box 8058, Little Rock, AR. 72203-9412
