Thomas Harvey “Tom” Boyer (age 85) of Lorain, Ohio died on April 1, 2023 after a brief illness. He was born on August 27, 1937 to Carl E. Boyer, Sr. and Beatrice A. (McDonald) Boyer in Akron, Ohio. Tom attended Poland Seminary High School in Poland, Ohio and earned a marketing degree at Kent State University (1960) followed up by his education at the Pittsburg Institute of Mortuary Science (1961).

He married his sweetheart since the fifth grade, Jere Lee Taaffe, on February 7, 1959, and they had two children: Kelly Ann and Tracy Lee. Tom began working at the Schwartz Spence Home for Funerals in 1961. He became the owner and operator in 1973 of what became the Schwartz, Spence, Boyer & Cool Home for Funerals, selling the funeral home in 2000 and retiring in 2019.

Tom greatly enjoyed his 1937 LaSalle; driving his dog, Charlie, around town in his pickup truck; and relaxing with good conversation in the company of friends and family.

A charter member of the former Northminster Presbyterian Church in Lorain, he served as elder and clerk of session. He then became a member of Heritage Presbyterian Church in Amherst.

He was highly active in the community, including the Lorain Exchange Club (two terms as president); Lorain Rotary Club (two terms as president); Lorain Chamber of Commerce (two terms as president); chaplain of the Lorain Family Y; Lorain Rehabilitation Center (treasurer); Lorain County Hospital Foundation (trustee); Ridgehill Memorial Park Cemetery (board member); Lorain County Funeral Directors Association (past president); Lorain Lighthouse Foundation (board member); and the Lorain Senior Fellowship (member).

Tom is survived by his wife of 64 years, Jere; his daughters Kelly (Don) Sagert and Tracy (Jeff) Isenberg; grandchildren, Ryan Sagert, Doug (Megan) Isenberg, Adam (Anna Shorter) Sagert, and Erin (Holly Liebhart) Isenberg; and great-grandson, Skylar Douglas Isenberg, his sisters-in-law, Marilyn Morrison,  Barbara Boyer and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Bea; his brother Carl, Jr.

The funeral and graveside service for family was held with Pastor Jimmy Madsen presiding.

The family will hold an open-house style of a Celebration of Life Ceremony at Heritage Presbyterian Church in Amherst on Friday, April 14 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. where everyone is welcome.
