Virginia Erdy Obituary

Virginia Erdy (nee Mramor), age 89, and a resident of Kendal of Oberlin died June 25th, 2024 after a short illness. 

Born August 2, 1934 in Lorain, Ohio, she was a life-long resident of Lorain County having lived in Lorain, in Amherst where she raised her family, and Oberlin. She was a member of the Oberlin Unitarian Universalist Church, and for the last 15 years resided in the retirement community of Kendal at Oberlin. 

Virginia was a graduate of Lorain High School, Huron Road School of Nursing, Case Western Reserve University (BA, Phi Beta Kappa), and Oberlin College (MA). She was successively employed as a nurse, a chemist for Standard Oil of Ohio, then taught chemistry and physics at Avon High School and North Ridgeville High School. After retirement, she tutored at Lorain County Community College. During her teaching career, she was an active member of the National Education Association, Ohio Education Association, and local associations serving as grievance representative, negotiator, and local president. She was also a high school ski club advisor for 25 years. 

Virginia remained active over the course of her life and pursued many interests. She exercised regularly, completed many home improvement projects, refinished furniture, created her own school education course work, gardened, and kept an immaculately clean home. She was an enthusiastic participant in recreation sports, engaging in downhill and cross country skiing, ice skating, mountain hiking with Elderhostel, and bowling. In her retirement years, she took up yoga and golf. She also liked to research and discuss a wide variety of intellectual topics and current events. 

She is survived by her daughter Janet Menges (Dylan), son Paul (Pam), grandchildren Joe Erdy, Hannah Erdy, and Luke Erdy, sister Mary Ellen Eaton, and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Paul Lewis Erdy on September 4, 2007, her parents Joseph P. and Amelia (Tomazic) Mramor, sister Arlene Grubic, brother Joseph J. Mramor, and niece Alison Dodson. A memorial service will be held at Kendal of Oberlin on Saturday, August 10, 2024 at 2:00 PM.
