Dr. Wilfred C. Wood

December 31, 1931 ~ February 12, 2017 (age 85) 85 Years Old


     Dr. Wilfred C. Wood, DVM, 85, of Lorain passed away on Sunday, February 12, 2017 at the O'Neill Healthcare Center in North Ridgeville following a long illness.
     Dr. Wood was born in East Cleveland on December 31, 1931, the son of the late William C. and Agnes (nee Sommers). He graduated Shaw High School in 1950 and received his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 1956 from The Ohio State College of Veterinary Medicine. While at OSU he competed on the 1951 Big Ten Champion Wrestling Team.
     He served in the U.S. Army Air Force as a Captain, stationed in Amarillo Texas from 1956 - 1958.
Dr. Wood purchased Lorain Animal Clinic in 1958 and practiced there until 1996, turning the practice over to his son Dr. Thomas Wood.
     He was a member of Lorain Rotary, Heritage Presbyterian Church, the Masonic Lodge, Beaver Creek Club, Elks, an original member of Lorain Country Club, and was a founding member of Northminster Presbyterian Church, as well as many others. He was very active in the community, serving on the Lorain City School Board and was instrumental in the building of Southview High School. He served on the YMCA board of directors overseeing the construction of the new location in 1968, and exercised there daily. He was a long-time Bank Director of the Central Security National Bank and Central Trust.
     He was an avid sportsman enjoying hunting, fishing, golf, bowling, handball, skiing, boating, snowmobiles, motorcycles, and cars. He was also a certified airplane pilot. He enjoyed all of these activities with his family.
     Dr. Wood is survived by daughters Judith A. Wood, Debra J, (Timothy) Pihlblad, Laura J, (Richard) Bobek all of Amherst, sons Dr. Thomas W. (Melinda) Wood, David J Wood both of Amherst; grandchildren: Matthew Pihlblad, Ryan Pihlblad, Meghan Bobek, Emily Bobek, Sydney Wood, Lindsey Wood, Patrick Wood, Connor Wood, William Bobek and great granddaughter Kennedy Pihlblad.
     In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Marian (nee Peters) Wood and a sister Irene Tongring.
     Friends may call on Wednesday, February 15, 2017 from 4- 7 in the Schwartz, Spence, Boyer & Cool Home for Funerals, 1124 W. 5th Street, Lorain.
     Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 am on Thursday, February 16, 2017 in the Heritage Presbyterian Church, 515 N. Leavitt Road, in Amherst with Rev. Jenni Walker Noyes, pastor, officiating.
     Burial will follow in the Ridge Hill Memorial Park in Amherst Twp with full military honors provided by D.A.V. Post 20 in Lorain.
